When the president axed CxP, he wound up with a huge backlash from congress. Does he think this will turn out any differently?

Now they're starting to realize that just because something has a 'science' label that doesn't mean the general public cares about it anymore than human spaceflight. The 'because we can' portion of human exploration offers a far more 'inspiring' factor to the average public than reams of scientific conference papers 99.9% of people don't understand or really care about. Sure, science is important, but not ANY science at any price.

I've a hunch Earth Science is next on the execution list as the Administration moves to offload 'green energy R&D' onto NASA. Maybe I'm too cynical but the fact that Elon Musk also owns 'Tesla' should raise some eyebrows.

And, surprise, just today Elon admits he's spend far more into R&D than he had admitted and, what a surprise, he needs more ...

So much for not 'wanting' government funds a short while back. This would be a good time for candidate Romney to make a statement on BEO human space exploration but, alas, I'm not going to hold my breath.

I agree. The HSF debacle is just a microcosm to what is being done to our country. Our nation is truly facing an alliance of "domestic enemies" and our people are asleep to it. But what to do but keep being aware and try to make people aware, at least those who choose to hear and see.

In my view this goes well beyond the "Newspace" folks as we're starting to see with supposedly 'game changing' high-tech ventures such as Solyndra and others which are just now starting to 'hit the fan'. For instance, try a websearch with the terms 'Lightsquared', 'GPS', and 'prominent donor' and you'll see how the potential for irreperable damage to the US goes well beyond only human spaceflight.

By the way, I wonder how Elon Musk's 'Tesla' venture is doing ...

Looks your predictions were correct, then. Once the hardware starts flying, the honeymoon is over.

Yes, I heard about that. What SpaceX and other New Space Boys will have to understand in the future; if you take taxpayer dollars, you can't hide your problems anymore. You are accountable to us. Elon and Bezos (of Blue Origin) are going to have a hard time with that. I talked about the increased scrutiny the New Space Boys would receive in my other post, "<a href="http://www.rv-103.com/be-careful-what-you-wish-for…/" rel="nofollow">Be Careful What You Wish For</a>."

Speaking of Newspace, SpaceX recently admitted to not disclosing an oxidizer-rich engine shutdown last year and denying that it happened for months.
